what is the "zipper cleat" method of repairing a crack?

I saw this on another post on this forum, only I don`t see were it is dicribed how to do it.

Basically, you glue a line of closely-spaced cleats on the crack, but put glue only on alternating sides, so that the cleats aren't holding the crack closed, but they are holding it level all the way along. Then glue the crack, pull the cleats and put real ones on.

With the temp cleats glued in, won't this mean risking leaving wood bits behind, and the glue that was used?

Ah, but that is probably when the sanding sponge and other small tools come into play, yes?
