Does anybody know of any decent planes that are cheaper than the ibex planes? _________________ Christian |

That’s very good advice actually. You can get cheaper ones, but ‘decent’ is not how I’d describe the Chinese made ones I’ve played with.
St. James Bay sells some at lower prices, and while you’d most likely have to wait for them to be made, they would at least be a better risk than the Chinese ones, although one hears mixed reviews of their finish and blade hardness. I have a little rebate plane from them which needed some work but has performed well once I had it up and running. |

This guy sells plans for making planes. He also makes plane irons. not cheap, but good stuff. http://www.hocktools.com/products.htm#BRinfo
I have bought good stuff from St James bay on ebay and have been happy as Andres Sender wrote about. Look for the squirrel tail plane thread. |

Years ago i bought a 3/4 in violin plane blade from lee valley in canada . it was very reasonable . I used hard maple for the block frame and made a very narrow mouth works great _________________ I am very interested in violin and bow making. Have quite a few interesting bows and a large cache of pernambuco. I like to experiment using local midwest hardwoods, |
