What would be a more modern design?? straight fholes, guitar shape, a more modern neck? I an thinking of making a whole new playing experience by changing the way notes are made. More on that later. Smile

To replicate the resonace patterns I added shaped pieces where it needed to be a higher resonance. the exact pattern I am not sharing yet. But I added a layer for each of the three higher pitch strings. I may add more later to catch the harmonics after I hear how this one plays under a professional hand. (I can barely play twinkle twinkle little star Shocked

)

I want to make a carbonfiber neck too, but have not figured out how I want to mold it yet.

Look up Luis and Clark carbon fiber instruments. They have incorporated a more modern design by removing the corners, giving it a futuristic look. It would be much more economical (not to mention a whole lot easier) to go without the corners and blocks. Your instument is beautiful, by the way. Very Happy

I have seen the louis and clark instruments and have read a number of reviews on them that said they sounded kind of flat. I also studied everything I could on how they are made. First off they are only 2 pieces, a bottom/rib/neck and the top plate. They also only use one thickness in the bottome/rib/neck so it can't resonate at the individual string frequencies. (Don't know about the top plate) Theirs do not look like a violin which turns some people off.

I am attemting to make one that sounds as "full" as a wooden one, and has the feel of a wooden violin. Thus the wood neck.

I have started my second instrument today. Will post musician's impressions as I get them.

Well, I had some one at a violin shop give it a try and it sounded pretty darn good. He said is was easy to play.

Just an update. I thought I was having bridge problems but it turned out I was having arch issues. The pressure of the strings compressed my arch. Didn't have a sound post in it and that contributed to the problem but I think I am going to have to add a few more layers to make it stronger.

why would you not have a sound post... especially if you are trying to emulate a real violin?? I think a SP would greatly enhance the tone and volume ... and would be a much better solution than thickening the plate. Seems to me all the testing has shown that the plate vibration is really a twisting vibration that uses the SP as a pivot point for the bass strings and as a transmitter for the treble strings , so if you remove it the there will be nothing for the top to pivot on and you will not have harmony in the fexing of the two plates.... just my 2 cents worth... these days its just worth 1 cent!

I was waiting on my sound post tool to come in. and it did on Tuesday. I put a sound post in and the top still deformed under string tension. I tried to add layers to the existing top but couldnt do it with the fingerboard on it so I will have to remove the fingerboard to thicken the top. The 2 that I am working on now I increased the layer count from 7 to 11, but 3 of those layers are not the full width of the top. I am hopeing this will add some extra "tone" to it. Will find out in a week or 2 when I get the next one complete.

I am also experimenting with a solid black plate with silver "flame" to it. The first one came out with hints of flame but my pattern needs some work. Very Happy

For gluing the top---try resin glue for a thin strip onto the top .Then use animal glue sides onto the strip.
What way will the vibrations move ?Outwards in a circular pattern?

Link to the new pictures.

All the old pictures and the new ones are in this album. New pictures show the new body/neck mold, the first body/neck made with the mold and the new CF bridge.

I got bored and made a CF bridge, it ramped up the bass and the volume to about twice their original. It isn't even fully fitted to the violin yet. I also made a piece for CF soundposts. Have not fitted one yet, but will when I put this latest one together.
