Has anyone ever tried nitrocellulose lacquer on a violin? I'm just curious of the results.

I'm pretty sure that is what is used on lots of cheap import violins.

I've tried it once and wasn't too pleased with the results. It looks nice initially, but tends to crack from temperature changes, and deadened the instrument considerably.

The old Kay instruments were finished nitrocellulose lacquer. The president of Kay was Bob Englehardt. Bob bought all the old Kay tooling and started Englehardt (making bass and cellos)
A great product is Deft. Deft is a nitrocellulose lacquer. It comes in flat and semi flat. This is a product that is used by some of the best restorers in the world, repairing old Cremona instrments and the like. This product always gets varnished over so you never really see it. Deft is expanded to water based and other prducts now days but the old line of product is still avail. today. Look at the back of the can; if it says nitrocellulose lacquer that contains a synthectic, you got it.

To the best of my knowledge, DEFT is only used for crack and defect filling in restoration work. Don't over use it!

Yes, It is not used to do a complete. My point is that it is a good product. It does have it's place.

The only lacquer use I've heard of is associated with violins is the use of a very thinned down clear lacquer as an overall sealer. Smells great too.
