I am fininding it very difficult to connect with a maker and pick up a few tips and pointers on making violins.

I am a woodworker and have built boats, furniture and everything else.

I have currently been practicing on scroll carving and have made and graduated several plates,( to historical specifications using ordered plans from "The art of Violin Making", a nice book by the way. )

I live in northern Va near DC.

Does anyone know of a maker intersted in helping. I understand that this will have a cost as I have worked with craftsmen before in the learning process.

James, you are welcome to come by my shop in Richmond, you could pick up a few tips, I love to talk making.
If you are really serious go take a workshop with Michael Darnton through SCAVM, it's just heaven for violin makers. It took me a while to learn that this is also a (huge) timesaver.

You should take Don up on his invitation. His woodworking and eyes are exceptional--some of the best in my workshop. You'll learn a lot.

Thank you all very much and I will contact Don.

I just spent a few hours looking at my plates and the patters they make under some bowing. (Didn't have sand but Chili Powder worked well Confused

)
