Started my first cello and just received the rib material. It is not flat by any means, rather is has some twisting and is cupped in a few areas. Is this normal for this larger maple rib stock? I think I should send it back but don't know if this is normal condition. If not, does anyone have a supplier they can recommend.

You don't say where you live, but I have seen large ribstock (double bass) do that because of a change in humidity from where it had been warehoused to my shop. I set it aside for a while and it eventually flattened out without any help from me.

Sorry, I guess you do say where you live. Birmingham is fairly humid, isn't it? The time I had the bass ribs warp, they had come from southern Oregon, where it is very dry, to northwest Oregon, where it is quite humid...so maybe that is what has happened with you, too.

It will make it easier to tell whether what you have is usable if you can post some pics of the rib stock.

If you have an account with any of the photo-hosting sites like Picasa, Photobucket, or Flicker, you can link to pics that you have posted there. Or, you can get the URL for the individual pic and paste it into your next post by using the "Img" button. That will make the pics instantly visible.

Thanks Chet, I have been following your progress with your cello and yes, the humidity could be the culprit. I will try to post an image.
