I haven't ever seen an instrument with alder in it. It doesn't seem like a horrible idea--a lot of other woods with wildly-varying characteristics have been used for backs and sides, and worked--maple, walnut, poplar, willow, beech, pear, cherry.
But isn't alder really rough to work? Or am I thinking of something else? _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog
