What are some of your favorite tips for any stage of the violin making process?

Have a well-defined system for what you do. . . like the edge-rounding thing in the other post. . . rather than digging in and hoping for the best.

I don't have a favorite trick... thats because I've never actually made a violin, or any other instrument for that matter ...other than a whistle!
But I have restored a violin or two.... and I just love the zipper cleat method to close a crack in a plate. Question is... is there a similar highly controlled and safe way to close a crack but from the outside without actually opening up the whole instrument? ... Its the guaranteed perfect alignment that I'm looking for.

It's all done with mirrors and smoke. :-)

I don't know an easy way to do it without the top off.

I've recently had a few "ah ha!!" moments, but I'd say one of my best moves was to start doing my purfling after assembling the body. This way, I can make my edges neatly follow the ribs, and likwise the purfling. Before, my biggest distraction (to me at least) was uneven overhang.
