I recently had a bow in my shop by A. H. Karr (Kansas City, USA). Pretty interesting in that he's a known bowmaker from the first part of the 20th century. Only problem is that someone has replaced the original frog with a plastic Glasser frog! _________________ Doug Wall

should make it easier to rehair though, that screw in th eplastic frog makes short work of the job!
LOL
Bummer for the bow though. What does the customer want from the bow? did you tell them about the frog before they left! Very important to go over the bow adn point out all the things wrong with it before they leave!!!!!
I learned my lesson once! |

The bow came in with an old fiddle that the owner played as a young girl.
My main job was to get the instrument back into playing condition. I only gave the bow a cursory glance when it came in. The plastic Glasser slide had been replaced with MOP, so it didn't even really look like a Glassed frog. Stick looked pretty straight, so I told her that I would rehair the bow. The Karr stamp is on the facet under the frog, so I didn't see that until I took the frog off to do the work. _________________ Doug Wall

Was AH Karr the first known American bowmaker? Has anyone ever tried to list all the American bowmakers and their work? Doug - did you keep a picture of that bow? |

No, I didn't take any pictures, but I can probably get it for pictures if anyone would like to see it. _________________ Doug Wall
