Woolhouse suggests that "an auxiliary bow be made of the proper dimensions, but so as to be quite straight; then, on being haired and screwed up in the ordinary way, it will show, in an inverted position, the exact curve to which other bows should be set (excerpt page 670)
Henry Saint-George. The Bow, Its History, Manufacture and Use / 'The Strad' Library, No. III. (Kindle Locations 680-682).
Hmmmm….”might work"
I like this as arriving at the arch for wood unknowns or diameters ..And assuming that Henry St. George is right about the stick has to be straight to vibrate properly (and that vibration is important)

As a fitter I had some training on vibrations in beam ..impact and decay (that I didn't use much)
but did use it when making a couple of violins years ago.. Magini pattern..(kind of)...
I tried sounding the bow blanks (5 in all) and each had a nice ring ..About a G in tone
Holding (hanging) the blank 4-5 inches from the top end by the corners and striking the lower third with a wooden crab mallet, the sticks sounded out nicely
If I had gotten a dull thud my gut tells me that it wouldn't be the greatest..(well maybe - maybe not)
The wood that I am using is some 30 year old seasoned Massaranduba that was left over from a bag pipe project that worked out very well

I should think any light trap that drops over the tip and frog would suffice
