| I have a violin apart built in the 1820's . Beautifully built. The top is interesting . It is all in one piece, with the Bass Bar carved in, as part of the top. The really puzzeler for me is there is this single "wooden nail" place aprox. opposite the lower Model point, protruding through the top, very pointed at the tip, about 3/32" in diameter. It's as if someone drove a wooden nail into the fiddle. I can see no purpose for this. Does anyone have any idea why this nail might be there? |

I am not sure what you mean by the model point?
not a locator pin to align the top and ribs? |

I'm going to guess that there was a hole there, and someone plugged it with a wooden pin.

I wasn't going to get into this, and I guess I should not try - modes and nodes are fairly advanced bs and fairly wide open to different interpretations depending on either "who" or "what book" you are referring to...
and usually, all it does is wind up going down "that very familiar road" - (ahem!),
In all truth, as R Mac suggests, a photo would help the most, Paul.
In particular, with a question such as this - if you have an idea that this violin has some merit - and you want to research it further, then tag information (if there) would probably help a great deal also...
