This is crazy. I've heard that this type of thing is popular in Japan but I've never actually seen anything quite like this.

The wood used in these demos of japanese planes is a special type of cedar which lends itself well to being sliced in thin ribbons. Take any wood that has any amount of grain in it and the ribbons fall apart.

That being said, there is a lot of magic factors that have to come together for that ribbon to come out like that. A perfectly straight edge on that wide of an iron amazes me. I wonder how it was sharpened. Probably they took the iron up in the rocky mountains instead of brings large sharpening blocks in the shop Smile
