You know, bub, I would be a lot more comfortable with your postings if you would leave out the advertisements (how to play the violin).

I'm pretty sure those are against the rules here, and if not, it is still rather bad form to work it into all your comments that way. It makes me take everything you say as suspicious of having a hidden agenda--being insincere at best.

By the way, having completed my first cello in August, I am hoping to return to the bass project, and build a second bass this winter. We'll see. I hope to follow the "Panormo" pattern I bought from Peter Chandler.

Well...only good intentions, so far, I'm afraid.

I have the wood, I have the pattern, and if I decided to just go build another gamba-cornered bass as I did the first time, I could start today. But I want to build a violin-cornered bass, and that means I have to build a new mold...which is a big job, and I have so much on my plate right now that it is difficult to slice a chunk of time large enough to even start.

Guess I need to go buy the materials for the mold and start there...transfer the lines, cut it out...step-by-step...that is the way any job gets done. We just don't always think of it that way.

I am currently plugging away at that lion-head viola, and intend to start another 5-string fiddle this week as well. I suppose what I really ought to do is go ahead and at least make a beginning on the new double bass mold.

For those interested, it will be the Vincenzo Panormo model Bass from Peter Chandler-- it is the one the book follows as he makes it, for the demonstrations and illustrations in the book.

Thanks for asking. Maybe that will be the push I need to get moving on it. Smile

been there & done that... with the procrastination & other things to do!
I tackle that problem now with the commitment to do at least 1 thing on the project each day no matter how much or little... even a 5 minute color test or an extra scraping ... whatever.
Amazing things happen... once you start its harder to stop... and before you know it, things get done.
The only thing that does get in the way is family committments, but that is ok ...as that is the priority in my life.

For those paying attention, I changed course, too. That is obviously NOT the Panormo (Chandler) pattern, but one of my own imaginings.

Also, this is the wood I acquired a few years ago from a friend, who gave me the whole log...so, if it turns out well, that will be great. Meanwhile I still have two full sets of gorgeously flamed maple and very good spruce which I got from John Tepper in 2006 or 2007. So, I'm still headed in the right direction, just taking a slightly different course to get there.

I had a couple of old thru neck fiddles I procrastinated on for many years... but once I got going.... I began to wonder what the procrastination was all about:)

Well, I finally went back and completed the bass I had begun so long ago:
