In "The Making Of Stringed Instruments",George Buchanan mentions a reinforcing spline running vertically on centre at the heel of the neck.He also mentions "it is rare for a violin neck to split across the short grain of the heel,it does happen and is quite a common occurrence in cellos." Is this necessary or common in violins? Thanks ,J.A.

Not necessary, or common for violins. It is one way to repair a break if one does happen.
