Well said Mat. The writing style is very clear and unambiguous. Just what a beginner needs . Advice on tools and violin models in the Strad is all mentioned in his book . As far as I know there are no obscure Latin phrases either . That has to be a bonus . |

Mat after I wrote the post above I noticed on the top line of my page where the Lock symbol sits that the darntonviolins.com site is not secure. What`s all that about ? |

Yes, my site is the same way... but as soon as you select to go to pay ( I use paypal) and before you enter any data the site automatically switches to the secure condition with the lock symbol closed. |

I only noticed the security symbol because I was recently plagued by a continuous barrage of fake security ads . MacAfee (fake )was one of them . Along with Norton (fake ). When I discovered the button on Microsoft security it all suddenly disappeared . My Microsoft scans always showed the computer was clean . Sadly Microsoft give no assistance at all about these rubbish adverts which are scams . |

Trying the end caps of the soundpost with end grain boxwood is not so good as cross grain boxwood. The endgrain seemed too brittle when put under pressure. I have not tried this in a violin yet but it`s getting closer . Testing the fit with angled wooden pieces under pressure does not make it unstable . I can always use plastic . Other people get away with it . Maybe spruce end caps with cross grain will avoid all the fitting and refitting . Just measure the centre of the post in this case . If I don`t try it I will never know. If it fails I will say so . No pressure . |

Edgar Russ who works in Cremona shows how he uses a clamp on a cello to get the soundpost adjusted. Well he shows where the clamp would fit but does not use it in the video .He just holds it above the cello for a few seconds .
See Edgar Russ Fitting a Soundpost @ 13.23
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1v2smll02E
Now it says this video is unavailable but I watched it less than 2 minutes ago .
But if you use the name and old fashioned English words it comes on just as normal .At 13.23 . |

Yes, that expands the instrument so that you can move the post around without scratching the top. Also, the post fits differently when it is tight or loose. That method doesn't solve the problem that the post fits differently again when the cello is strung up, but it's certainly a clever start to solving the problem. _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog

The intuitive way to squeeze a violin might be to place a clamp in the c bouts but a stronger position would be just above the corners where the corner blocks are stronger and the belly is not intersected by a sound hole. If it was a brick building the c bouts would start to crack and fall apart . |
