Volutes vary from 38 mm to 44 mm. How does the violin maker decide on the width of the scroll (width), does 38 mm indicate german? while 44 mm indicate french? or is it based on mathematical formula or just the eye of the maker or ???

The scroll and its intricacies are a deeply personal thing altogether. While the size, shape, and workmanship of a scroll can be the signature of its maker or school (as it so often is), there is no direct correlation between scroll width and country of origin.

"The scroll is very distinctive with its small head and wide ears that are characteristic of the Neopolitan school", a comment from Purcell strings,
Anyone familiar with a violin with small head and wide ears ?
