I have been wondering as a maker how well do you play the violin?
I hear that alot of makers make great violins but are not very good at playing them.
I just thought I would see what you guys think?
Are you playing the Bach Chaconne or are you playing twinkle twinkle? 
If you could maybe list some of your favorite things to play. |

| what I do with a bow and 4 strings by many is NOT considered playing. Scales and an arpeggio is about it for me. Just something to get the basic sound adjustment. I do have access to violinists and cellists often enough that it is not a problem though. |

| Chet I went to your webpage and I really like the pictures of your violins. I also checked out some of the links you provided to the workshops that you have been to. I think I might check into going to some of those. Which one was your favorite? |

Any thing Fritz Kreisler.
Current favorite is La Fille Aux Cheveau De Lin (The girl with the golden hair) by Debussy
Beethoven string trios are some of my favorites.
Whatever our community orchestra is working on at present, I'm playing second fiddle.

Depends on what you are looking for...do you want to learn to make violins, and have a fairly intensive week, two weeks, three weeks? Go to Michael Darnton in Jim Brown's school in Claremont, CA.
Just want a bunch of good ol' boys making fiddles (some of whom are quite serious, mind you, and making good violins)?... then The Chimneys' Workshop is pretty pleasant. But you will not get nearly as much done, nor get nearly as much hands-on teaching.
I don't know where you are located. There are other schools, workshops, etc. I understand the classes at the University of New Hampshire are pretty good. The North Bennet street school in Boston has a good reputation. But those are regular schools. If you are looking for a one to three week stint, I suppose Jim Brown's school is probably about the best available.
I'm glad you liked the website-- it isn't much-- it was built by a friend, using the Yahoo helps, and I don't know how to add to it or change it.
I am currently building ten instruments (seven violas and three violins) to try to get ready for a show at Marylhurst University, in April. Pretty busy. All of them are ready for purfling (actually, three are beyond that stage) but I am ahead of schedule, so feeling fairly good about the prospects. Teaching at a local Community College, too, so evenings will be fairly busy. If I can figure out how to put the progress up, I will do so. Maybe I should just give in to current events and get a web log started. My kids know how to do that.
Here's a photo, anyhow...it is a week old. everything is further along. I have begun purfling the viola third from the left, and the violin that was still flat plates on the far right. From the left, there are a 16.5", two 16.25", a 16", a 15.75", a 14" viola and then three violins.

It'd be nice to have something in the south during the winter. We southern boys feel a bit left out. Maybe we need to have a fiddle making school instead of violin making school!
Let's do something in Asheville, or Chattanooga. Tek ya'll out bar huntin. Who in their right mind would leave the Blue Ridge Mountains for California, or Tucson! Especially in April when the dogwood is blooming.

I can't play that well but I can repair a hell of a violin. LOL
