Someone is telling me that "scale length" is the length between the nut and the bridge. I had never heard that terminology before. Is that correct? And also, they want that information for a 7/8 violin. If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

POStSCRIPT: I just talked to the lutheir at my distributors and he said that the 7/8 is not standardized and the length depended on the instrument model. Is there anywhere online where I might be able to access these kinds of specs?

Thanks

Scale length for a 4/4 size violin is generally about 12 7/8 inches, some as long as 13".

A 7/8 instrument I would guess would be somewhere around perhaps 12 1/2", not enough difference in my opinion to warrant even having this size of an instrument.

Thank you; the luthier got back to me. They have a 314mm and 316mm which translates to 12.36 and 12.44

Try here.

http://www.centrum.is/hansi/mesvioli.html

189 mm -Stop Length
126 mm -Neck Length
+
-----------------------
315 mm total

There is a 3:2 ratio for Stop Length to Neck Length.

String Length 317 mm since the arching and bridge increase the String Length over the Nut to Bridge Length.
