in conjunction with my caliper....i found it very helpful to hold my top plate up with the sun shining through....i found this a very accurate way to determine the semitry of my thickness, a halogen worked well at night...

I've used this method to get down to the last 5mm or so, but from there, you really need a caliper, as some parts of the wood are more translucent than other, and not necessarily because of thickness. Check it out before going too far into the wood just because its opaque.
