I have only just found out that these synthetic pigments exist . They are colour fast and the particles are smaller than natural pigment particles . So two useful points . The adverts confuse me . They show small piles of rusty coloured particles but there are at least four colours and you need to pick the right ones .
Up till now I watched out for colour fastness (ie red fading to green).Also the opacity is still important. Too opaque means you end up with paint instead of varnish . There are large books explaining the enormous pitfalls possible in mixing colours , I used to try to find pigments that worked as Glazes for artistic painters . Dry powder and art paint tubes sometimes have useful information printed on labels and tubes .And sometimes not. Two different brands with the same colour name can be dramatically different . Varnish is one big headache . Colours is another big headache .
