My son in law plays a guitar with nasty steel strings and I asked him about chords .He knows the names of chords from charts --whereas I grew up reading notes without chord names on the sheet music. So I cannot have a proper conversation with guitar players .I admit my complete ignorance without any shame . Is that unusual or par for the course for violin players ?

On Fiddle Hangout this question about knowing chord names came up .The guitar players had all been trained to know chords and their names . The Fiddlers knew nothing about all that . A clear separation . They just played the notes .But violins only let you play two strings at a time . Guitarists have a thumb and four fingers and they can use them all together apart from strumming .
