reading about using this dutch rush to rub silica from the ends of the reeds
to imbed the silica into the wood pores. I think it was Michael D. talking about that.

My question is can we find this reed here in America ? Is that something I can find at a big box home improvement store ????

Tim

pS---- has anyone tried using "silica flour" ? It is sub micron glass dust
used for investment casting. ( its the refractory slurry material) (bad to breathe--)

It grows in damp land. Looks like green round files in sections about 2" long. It looks a bit like a green car antenna, about 2 feet long. I have never used it. I understand it gets split, flattened, and dried in small sheets.

also known as Equisetum Hyemale.

grows wild quite commonly in southern ontario.... don't know about other regions.
I bought some live plants for propagation from a local nursery.

We have it around where I live in the damp areas like Michael mentioned. I use it all the time. I split the "reed" and then stick it to a small square of duct tape. It works great and leaves the surface very smooth - not sandpaper smooth but shiny, scraper smooth.

I ran into tons of it growing near the shoe of Lake Ontario where I live. As was said, look in damp areas.
