On popular demand; here are some pictures of varnishing.
Finished violin:
I decided to try get a dark ground so I used a tea stain and ammonia fuming overnight
Then some sodium nitrite 4% and uv tanning
Then Joe Robson's ground system and aged wood gold color
My "drying cabinet"
These are some pictures after one coat of varnish. Joe Robson greek pitch brown mixed with dark rose color concentrate

Absolutely beautiful, fjodor.
I have to agree entirely with kjb, it looks wonderful, and the scroll shots shown here are top notch work.
Please let me know how you like and what you think of the Robeson varnish.
He sent me some, shortly after I had my stroke, and I'm just now getting to the point where I can use them on something I have made, and I have always been curious about his products.
But aside from the varnish concerns, (and let me add, that there seems to be great varnish results also.) well, I have to say the workmanship you have here, is marvelous thus far- thanks so much for posting those photos.
Are you not entirely finished with it yet? Is it not strung up yet?

Oops, that is actually a mug shot of me, drawn by a talented street artist, some years ago, it must have fell from the wall
Many thanks for the kind words ctviolin and kjb. I plan to give this violin to my father. So I hope to have it finished to the beginning of next month to his birthday. He has actually made a violin himself, so I think he will appreciate it.
I like the varnish from Robeson. This particular varnish, greek pitch brown, is very thick, and I had some problems with it at first. I stripped the front with acetone because i could not get an even coat. He adviced me to thin it with some drops of linseed oil and mineral spirits and it became much more managable.
I think i will even out some small spots and add another clear coat and then call it finished!

I should add that I used my fingers and a small brush to "tap" and spread the varnish a small area at a time. It was still too thick to brush out after diluting it. |
