| I just bought a new violin , its supposed to be a copy of the French maker s violin Paul Bailly around 1905 or there abouts , does anyone know anything BOUT THIS MAKER OR HIS VIOLINS was he copying a strad style or what? did he do his own style maybe ?I did read on the net that he made decent violins . The reason I bought it was or is to have around so I could make assentsments as to my own building not nessearly to copy but to compare my own workmanship rather than to reley on pictures. Russell |

Hi Russell,
Paul (Joseph) Bailly according to Karl Jalovec's encyclopedia of violin makers;
Mirecorrt, London, Paris.
Born 1844, died in 1915.
May very well be the wrong Bailly. (?)
Amongst other things trained in Mirecourt with C.F.Vuillaume who sent him to his brother J.B.Vuillaume in Paris.
moved to Paris, then to London, and later to Mirecourt and eventually back to Paris. (Etc., etc)
He worked for "leading London and Paris firms" and made all kinds of vioilns, but chiefly imitated Strad's Messiah.
The tone of HIS instruments is said (in Jalovec) to be fine, well balanced and responsive...
Helped by his sons later in life.
