Some time ago I decided to try a copy of the 1735 "Plowden" Del Gesu. I made some mistakes, and had to make a new top, so it took me a little longer. I don't think I quite caught the del Gesu flavor. It plays well, though; very easy-playing, and very well balanced.
The only strings I had were light Dominants, so it is not quite as powerful as I had hoped, but I will try some heavier strings when I get some.
I'll try again sometime. Meanwhile, here are pictures of the new violin:

Hmmm.
It does look a little large in that photo, doesn't it? I had intended 1mm to allow a little leeway for future planing of the neck if it was ever needed.
I just went and measured it. It is actually 1.5mm. Sorry. Just clumsy, I guess.  And, to make matters worse, there is a bit of a notch at the base of it that makes it look even bigger.

Hi Chet,
Nicely done! I like the way the varnish looks as it has a nice aged look to it! Keep up the good work. I'm curious about how people treat the corners of Delgesu instruments, most of the pictures of his instruments show really worn corners or maybe they are just short to begin with and then look more worn as a result. Any ideas or opinions? Clearly your corners are long but look nice, how did you ecide on how to handle the corners? |

For my money, whether you do antiqued or not, you should start with "pristine" del Gesu corners. These do exist, for instance on a child's violin by him. I e-mailed the pictures to Chet, perhaps he could upload them.
Another useful thing to keep in mind about del Gesu is that the corner overhangs can be really severe - as much as 5mm. In other words, the corner shape is in certain sense not dependent upon the rib outline.
All this should serve as a good moment for Michael D to chime in - what he doesn't know about this isn't worth knowing. |
