hi everyone can anyone advise me of purchasing a reamer suitable for reaming the holes for a 4/4 strad copy the ones i have looked at so far are
very expensive for such a basic tool thank you Crying or Very sad

You could try ebay. I don't know what is available there. International Violin (www.internationalviolin.com) sells a US made reamer (T-410) for 37 USD plus shipping. I use one and like it. You would need to inquire about shipping to UK, but it might be reasonable.

I read an interesting account recently of how some Chinese workshops shape peg holes by plunging a hot tapered mandrel into the hole, burning the taper, and it seems to work fine. I guess you could get out a file and make such a mandrel for yourself if your time is cheap enough to you.

thank you for that i have looked at your pics very intersting i have a hand reamer but it goes from 3mm to 12 mm i only paid abot £4 for this i was wondering if i could use this if i marked it up using tape Embarassed

You realize, of course, that you will also need a peg shaper. Pegs come as "blanks" and need to be fitted, with a shaper, to fit the tapered peg holes.

Albert,
Your reamer sounds a lot like one I have that is very steep. You want a taper of one in 30 (5 mm change in 150 mm). You also don't want cutting edges all the way around. They chatter.

That may partly explain why I have never seen a Chinese fiddle with standard taper peg holes. Most of them are a little steeper, but a few are less steep. I have made a couple of reamers by tapering a rod (using a grinder), then cutting away half of it lengthwise. Actually works fairly well and will cut in either direction. Won't work for burnishing, though.

Hi, I have a question...
There are two types of violin 1:30 peg hole reamers: with spiral flutes, and with straight flutes. Which one is better? I don't want to order the wrong one...

Most people like the straight flute type better.
