Someone had a US Pat. on them at one time. It may have run out by now. Like Michael Darnton has said,"I didn't find any particular advantage to them." Mostly hype.

Why?
I used to buy romainian violins from Jim Eaton when he went over to EMMC. The Romainian violins that he sold had a longer peg box so that I could make 5 strings out of them for some customers.

I use it. As far as a commercially made varnish it is very easy to use. Most work is dry the next day. I buy the clear and color it as needed for the specific job.

Yes, It is not used to do a complete. My point is that it is a good product. It does have it's place.
