Why don't you just try it with a cheap set of string first to see if they will be long enough? Maybe even some take offs to give it a try.
It is certainly not going to hurt anything to get it a try.

Antiquing is something that many customer like...but it is not just a modern idea. From things I have read many of the violins from the past were "antiqued".

You are correct about the possibility of creating a buzz. If I am going to leave it on I will slide it down as far as I can on the windings.
